-Program Note

This thoughtful and poetic documentary is filled with diverse voices. Some are those of hunters in Russia‘s far north, searching for the tusks of extinct wooly mammoths on the Arctic‘s New Siberian Islands. It‘s a dangerous and lonely trip, but the hunters persevere in the hopes of finding a high-grade mammoth tusk that will fetch them many thousands of dollars. Meanwhile Semyon GRIGORIEV, head of the Mammoth Museum in Yakutsk Russia, also takes a great interest in the mammoth remains, which are becoming exposed due to melting Arctic ice. But his hope is to find a living cell, which could then be used to create a living clone of the massive animals. This leads him to South Korea, where the formerly disgraced geneticist HWANG Woo-suk runs a lucrative business cloning puppies, and then to Shenzhen, China to visit BGI, the world‘s biggest gene sequencing lab. As scientists talk about creating new life forms and bringing back extinct species, the hunters continue their lonely quest.(Darcy PAQUET)
